Hello ODIN Backers!
I am currently in Shenzhen visiting the engineering office. As you know, we shipped out a batch of ODINs in mid-February before the Chinese New Year. At that time we were not able to ship out all the products, because of the small gap at the rotation hinge and the pending factory shutdown due to Chinese New Year.
The general response has been positive from the initial ODIN receivers. People have been impressed by the optical quality from such a small device and the responsiveness of the Android operating system. We also received feedback on areas to improve from the initial users and we identified three areas that received consistent comments.
- Mouse pad is not intuitive for dragging and swiping
- Movies are too dark during indoor scenes
- Speaker sound is too low
Mouse Pad: We are limited in what we can do, because we are using a mouse pad and not a touch panel like a tablet or smart phone. We will put up more tutorial videos for dragging and swiping functions.
Dark Indoor Movie Scenes: We noticed that some indoor movie scenes from House of Cards and Hunger Games (streaming from Netflix and Hulu) were too dark for an optimal movie viewing experience. This “darkness” issue was due to low quality of streaming content and ODIN’s high contrast setting. High contrast is good for distinguishing fine lines on screen but it will make the light lines darker.
The screen on the left has a lower contrast setting and the screen on the right has a high contrast setting. The high contrast setting (right) was sent to the first round of ODIN backers.
Speaker Sound: We heard from enough backers saying the volume was too low for comfortable hearing.
What Are We Changing?
(A) Mouse Pad – no changes. More tutorial videos to be uploaded on Support Site.
(B) Dark Indoor Movie Scenes – Lower the contrast setting in the HDMI chip to improve dark indoor movie scenes.
(C) Speaker Sound – Switch to new speaker amplifier, which increases sound output by 25 to 30%.
(D) Gap in the Rotation Hinge
(E) Refinished the Aluminum Base by Sand Blasting
The old aluminum base paint coating was sensitive and we noticed that a lot of the paint was coming off easily. We re-finished the aluminum base by sand blasting it, which made the exterior more durable and scratch resistant. The only downside is the added thickness (less than 0.25 millimeter) is making it a bit difficult to initially open the device. We think the benefits outweigh the cost.
You can see that the new sand blasted finishing can withstand intentional scratching with a scissor.
Pre-Orders: Do you know anyone else that wants an ODIN? We still have a few left and people can pre-order on our website.
New Delivery Estimate
We are planning to restart mass production next week and it will take approximately 2.5 weeks. We will send the goods to our distribution center in HK around third week of April and we will start shipping on the week of April 27th.
First ODIN Shipment Receivers
If you received the first ODIN shipment and want to change the settings, we will have more news for you after we ship out rest of the ODINs. Please save your customs duty payment slip or retrieve them somehow in order to prove that you already paid for customs. Some countries charge customs and some don’t. We will try to cover part of the shipping price back and forth.
